Postnatal Care GP help & information

What is Postnatal Care?

Please follow these important steps for new parents to ensure proper postnatal care for both the mother and the baby. Here are the key steps:

  • Immediate Notification: Inform the surgery as soon as you arrive home with your new baby to arrange care by the doctor, midwife, and health visitor team.

  • Child’s Registration: Send the child’s registration form to the surgery promptly after the birth is registered. You can also do this online. Please Click Here and you will be taken to the registration page.

  • Six-Week Postnatal Check: At six weeks post-delivery, a full postnatal check, including contraception advice, will be offered to all mothers. The baby may also receive their BCG vaccination during this visit or you may be asked to visit the hospital for the BCG to be administered to the baby.

  •  Information and Support: The surgery aims to provide comprehensive information and support during pregnancy and after the birth. A leaflet detailing the roles of the GP, Community Midwife, Health Visitor, and hospital clinics in antenatal and postnatal care is available at reception.
