Cervical Screening

Cervical Screening (Smear Test)

Our practice nurses provide a comprehensive cervical cancer screening service, which is a crucial part of the national campaign aimed at reducing cervical cancer deaths. This initiative has significantly contributed to the decline in cervical cancer mortality rates in recent years.

Recommended Screening Schedule

  • Women aged 25-50: Every 3 years
  • Women aged 50-65: Every 5 years

The Screening Process

The cervical screening test, commonly known as a smear test, involves a nurse performing a vaginal examination to collect a sample of cells from the cervix, which is the neck of the womb. This procedure is quick and typically causes minimal discomfort. The collected sample is then sent to a laboratory where it is examined under a microscope to identify any abnormal cells.

Purpose of the Screening

The primary aim of cervical screening is to detect abnormal cells on the cervix that could potentially develop into cervical cancer if left untreated. Early detection of these cells allows for timely intervention and treatment, significantly reducing the risk of cervical cancer developing. This proactive approach is vital in maintaining women’s health and preventing serious health issues.
